Why
study in USA
The United States hosts more international students than any other
country in the world, a number fast approaching 600,000. In fact,
foreign students comprise approximately 4% of the total undergraduate
USA college population and 10% for graduate school. These students
come from every continent in the world because they believe that
an American higher education would afford them the best preparation
for their future. They leave homes, families and friends in order
to pursue their dreams in the United States. In fact, International
students in the USA contribute more than $11 billion to the American
economy, and the number of students enrolling in USA schools has
increased after the events of September 11.
The USA offers international students the most exciting, rewarding
and comprehensive array of study options in the world. While the
reasons foreign students choose to come to the USA to study vary,
there are 9 main ones as summed up as follows:
-
Diverse Cultures
The United States calls itself "a nation of immigrants."
Therefore one finds that all ethnicities and nationalities are represented,
although not to the same extent in every city. The country is vast
(over 9 million square kilometers) and populous (over 275 million
people). In the US, one can encounter and experience almost any
climate, landscape, lifestyle, and culture imaginable.
US
Education System
Undergraduate
Degrees: A bachelor's degree is the traditional
degree given by American colleges and universities. It normally
requires at least four years but not more than five years of full-time
college-level coursework. The two classes of bachelor's degrees
awarded by US schools are the Bachelor of Science (also called the
B.S.) and the Bachelor of Arts (also called the B.A.). Some schools
offer only the B.A., even for science majors (such as a B.A. in
Biology). Other schools offer both the B.A. and the B.S.
Entry Requirements: Year 12 or equivalent from a recognised
board. It is mandatory to appear for an English Language Test like
TOEFL and achieve a minimum score 500 for a paper based test or
173 for a computer based test. The TOEFL must have been taken within
the last two years.
Postgraduate
Degrees: The master's degree is a graduate
school degree that typically requires two years of full-time coursework
to complete. Students in a master's degree program will complete
courses that are highly focused in their field of study (their major).
Taught masters' courses allow graduates to specialize in their subject
- by way of lectures, seminars and tutorials- followed by a period
of research, known as dissertation. Doctorate Degree typically takes
between three to six years.
Entry Requirements: An undergraduate degree from a recognised
university in the relevant subject, although some master's courses
are designed into a specific field like Information Technology where
relevant undergraduate degree is not required. Students are normally
expected to have a postgraduate degree for research program. Students
are required to take English Language proficiency test like TOEFL
and achieve a score of 550-600 for a paper based test or 213-250
for a computer based test. Besides this, the students are also required
to take tests like GRE or GMAT for the courses in Engineering and
Management.
