About the country

The official name of the country is United States of America. The capital of USA is Washington DC. USA is a Federal Multiparty Republic with an area of 9,372,608 Sq Km (3,618,784 Sq Mi) and an estimated population of 271,290,000. The United States is located on the North American Continent and is the fourth largest country in the world.

        

 

 

The national territory consists of three separated territories. (1.) The continental 48 states, (2.) Alaska and (3.) Hawaii. The United States has a varied climate with conditions characteristic of temperate deserts to arctic. Central USA has a continental climate with extreme variations in temperature. Winters are usually cold with frequent blizzards while summers are hot. Average temperature ranges in Washington DC are from -3 to 6 degrees Celsius (27 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit) in January to 20 to 31 degrees Celsius (68 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit) in July.
The principal ethnic group is the Whites of European origin who account for approximately 76% of the population. Other ethnic minorities include African Americans who account for 12% of the population while Hispanics account for around 9%, Asians and Pacific Islanders for around 3% and the Amerindians, Eskimos and Aleuts constitute 0.7% combined.

The United States has no official language, although English is the national language. Other languages include a sizable Spanish speaking minority as well as other various ethnic minority languages. The official currency of the United States is the Dollar (USD) divided into 100 Cents.

US Education System

Undergraduate Degrees: A bachelor's degree is the traditional degree given by American colleges and universities. It normally requires at least four years but not more than five years of full-time college-level coursework. The two classes of bachelor's degrees awarded by US schools are the Bachelor of Science (also called the B.S.) and the Bachelor of Arts (also called the B.A.). Some schools offer only the B.A., even for science majors (such as a B.A. in Biology). Other schools offer both the B.A. and the B.S.

Entry Requirements: Year 12 or equivalent from a recognised board. It is mandatory to appear for an English Language Test like TOEFL and achieve a minimum score 500 for a paper based test or 173 for a computer based test. The TOEFL must have been taken within the last two years.

Postgraduate Degrees: The master's degree is a graduate school degree that typically requires two years of full-time coursework to complete. Students in a master's degree program will complete courses that are highly focused in their field of study (their major). Taught masters' courses allow graduates to specialize in their subject - by way of lectures, seminars and tutorials- followed by a period of research, known as dissertation. Doctorate Degree typically takes between three to six years.

Entry Requirements: An undergraduate degree from a recognised university in the relevant subject, although some master's courses are designed into a specific field like Information Technology where relevant undergraduate degree is not required. Students are normally expected to have a postgraduate degree for research program. Students are required to take English Language proficiency test like TOEFL and achieve a score of 550-600 for a paper based test or 213-250 for a computer based test. Besides this, the students are also required to take tests like GRE or GMAT for the courses in Engineering and Management.

Tuition Fees and Living Expenses

The tuition fees vary from course to course and from institution to institution. The tuition fees usually vary from US$ 5,000 to US$ 25,000 (Rupees 2.4 Lakh to Rupees 12 Lakh) per annum. The estimated living expenses per annum are around US$ 5,000 to US$ 10,000 (Rupees 2.5 to 5 Lakh approximately), which include accommodation, food, travel expenses, clothing and communication etc.

Part Time Work

All international students are authorized to work for up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during vacations. During the first year of their study the students can take up only on campus jobs and after that they can even take off campus jobs in order to subsidize their living expenses to some extent.
