About the country

New Zealand is a Parliamentary democracy, offering a safe political environment for international students and visitors. It has a population of only 3.8 million and is similar in size to the United Kingdom or Japan. New Zealand is primarily a European culture, which has absorbed many of the rich and historic cultural elements from the Maori and Pacific Island heritages, and now from its rapidly growing multi-cultural Asian communities.

The capital of New Zealand is Wellington (population approximately 400,000), situated at the southern tip of the North Island. Other major cities and towns are:

Auckland (population approximately 1,100,000)
Hamilton (population 120,000)
Palmerston North (population approximately 75,000)
Christchurch (population approximately 400,000)
Dunedin (population approximately 110,000).

New Zealand Education System

Undergraduate Degrees: Bachelor Degree- basic level for most professions and entails 3 or more years of study; and the Bachelor Degree with Honours- if the student achieves excellent results, he can do further year of study and apply for honours.

Entry Requirements: Year 12 or equivalent from a recognized board. An alternative entry path is to successfully complete a Foundation Studies program or enter via a Diploma course offered by the recognized polytechnics or Institutes of Technology. A minimum score of band 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) in IELTS is required. Some institutions may require higher level of English proficiency.

Postgraduate Degrees: Graduate Diploma-1 year course, building further professional knowledge and skills. Masters Degree- 1 to 2 years.

Entry Requirements: a Bachelors degree with a first class or upper second class from a recognized university. A work experience is sometimes required. A minimum score of band 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0) in IELTS is required. Some institutions may require higher level of English proficiency. Doctoral Degree (PhD)- 3 to 4 years. Entry requirements: a recognized masters degree, or a first degree with first class honours, or an equivalent.

Universities and Institutions

There are 8 state-funded (government-funded) universities in New Zealand. Most universities have specialist fields that they are well known for, such as:

  • Auckland University of Technology
  • The University of Waikato
  • Pacific International Hotel Management School

In addition to the above-mentioned universities, there are 21 state-funded (government-funded) polytechnics and institutes of technology in New Zealand, which offer foundation and diploma courses.

Tuition Fees and Living Expenses

The tuition fees vary from course to course and from university to university. The tuition fees usually vary from NZ$ 10,000 to NZ$ 18,000 (Rupees 2 Lakh to Rupees 3.75 Lakh) per annum. The estimated living expenses per annum are around NZ$ 9,000 to NZ$ 11,000 (Rupees 2 Lakh approximately), which include accommodation, food, travel expenses, clothing and communication etc.

Part Time Work

International students who wish to work during the long summer holidays are permitted to do so if they are undertaking a full time course of more than 12 months duration. They will need to apply for a variation to their student permit from the local branch of the New Zealand Immigration Service and pay a fee. (It should be noted however, finding employment should not be an expectation for those entering a tertiary institution).

Postgraduate students may, on application, be granted a variation to their study permit to enable them to undertake part-time employment during their studies provided the employment does not exceed 15 hours per week and the application is accompanied by a letter of support from the institution.
