About the College
The Georgian college was opened in 1967. It is a public institution
governed by the Province of Ontario. Georgian College is a progressive,
modern community college located in the heart of Ontario's tourist
region.
The College is in final implementation of a capital expansion plan
unprecedented in its 35-year history. The College will be unveiling
its new 104,000 sq ft. Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning very
soon, with the capacity to accommodate more than 2,000 additional
full-time students. This $27 million investment will feature a technology-enhanced,
integrated learning environment including additional multimedia
enabled classrooms, "wired" student common areas, a 250-station
open computer lab, and a new expanded Learning Resource Centre.
The college offers over 50 diploma and degree option programs and
over 20 certificate and post-diploma programs. The College has a
total full time student population of approximately 5,000 and a
total part time student population of approximately 20,000. In all,
the College has over 200 international students!
The College is home to many centres and institutes like the
Great Lakes International Marine Training Centre, Canadian Aviation
Institute, Justice & Public Safety Institute, Centre for Automotive
Parts Expertise and Canadian Automotive Institute.
According to the Key Performance Indicators Survey (KPI) released
in April 2002, Georgian College continues to rank among the top
colleges in Ontario:
- 92.4 percent of its graduates found employment within
six months - that's the second highest score in the province!
- 86.1 percent of graduates were satisfied to very satisfied
with their education - the second highest score in the province
and well above the system average.
Campuses
The Georgian College has 3 campuses each at Barrie, Orillia and
Owen Sound. All the campuses provide students with world-class study
environment and facilities.
- Barrie: The Barrie campus is the largest of the three
main campuses. Barrie is an exciting place to be. The caring, friendly
college offers all the amenities of the large city colleges while
providing students with a safe, clean living and study environment.
With its 525-bed residence, expanded Stduent and Athletic Centre
complete with two tournament sized gyms, huge fitness centre, café,
lounge and an outdoor patio, and state-of-the-art learning facilities
at the Centre for Technology Enhanced Learning, the Barrie Campus
is brimming with activity. There are almost 4,000 full-time and
10,000 part-time students already enjoying life on this busy campus.
The Barrie city has a population of over 120,000 people and is situated
one hour north of Toronto, on the shores of Kempenfelt Bay. The
city is located on beautiful Lake Simcoe, in the middle of tourist
country. The city offers a great bus system, lots of movie theatres,
lots of nightspots, clubs, live theatre, art galleries, restaurants,
shopping malls, beaches, walking and biking trails and lots of fun!
- Orillia: Students talk about the warm and friendly atmosphere
found at the Orillia Campus. It is situated in a beautiful woodland
setting at the south end of Orillia; this campus has much to offer
its 1,000 strong student body including a 150-seat theatre, racquetball
court, gym, weight room and pub.
The city of Orillia is known as the "Sunshine City". Orillia
sits on the shores of lake Couchiching, a little more than one hour's
drive north of Toronto. As the gateway to Ontario's scenic cottage
country, this lovely city of 21,000 has more than its share of recreational
opportunities. Downtown Orillia is home to a large marina port surrounded
by extensive parkland.
- The Owen Sound Campus: It may be a small campus in terms
of size, but when it comes to personal attention, the Owen Sound
Campus couldn't get any bigger. The students are not a number here
- most students are known by name. It is a place where it is easy
to fit in and get involved with many campus activities.
A small city of 21,500 built around a safe, natural harbour on Georgian
Bay in the heart of Grey-Bruce County; Owen Sound has the best of
both worlds. It has an attractive downtown shopping core, excellent
museums, fine dining, nightclubs, a symphony orchestra and theatres.
But it is also a nature lover's paradise with great beaches and
endless opportunities for canoeing, hiking, rock-climbing and cross-country
skiing.
