About the country

The official name of Cyprus is Republic of Cyprus. The capital of the country is Nicosia (Lefkosia), with the Government system being Unitary Multiparty republic. The area covered by the country is 9,251 Sq Km (3,572 Sq Mi) with an estimated population of 8,14,800.

Cyprus is located in northeastern corner of the Mediterranean, at the meeting point of Europe, Asia and Africa. It is the third largest Mediterranean island in the world. The major cities of the country are Lefkosia, Limassol and Larnaca.

Cyprus has a typical Mediterranean climate with hot dry summers and mild wet winters, with rainfall occurring mainly between November and March. The official languages are Greek and Turkish with English often used as a second language and widely understood by people. The official currency is the Pound (CP) divided into 100 Cents.

Cyprus Education System

Undergraduate Degrees: The normal undergraduate degree is, generally three to four years in duration. A few universities also offer Honours degrees.

Entry Requirements: Year 12 or equivalent from a recognized board. However, in some cases additional requirements in a respective field might be valid. For most courses good knowledge of English is a must and has to be proven by tests like the TOEFL or the IELTS. The necessary score required is 550 for a paper based test or 213 for a computer-based test in TOEFL or a minimum of band 6.5 in IELTS.

Postgraduate Degrees: The Masters degrees usually take 1.5 to 2 years of study. Taught masters' courses allow graduates to specialize in their subject - by way of lectures, seminars, practical training, and tutorials. Many universities also offer research Degrees; where the students are expected to carry out original research and produce a thesis.

Entry Requirements: An undergraduate degree from a recognized university in the relevant subject is generally required. Students are normally expected to have a postgraduate degree for research program. The students are also required to take English proficiency test like TOEFL with a minimum score of 550 for a paper based test or 213 for a computer based test in TOEFL or a minimum of band 6.5 in IELTS.

Tuition Fees and Living Expenses

The tuition fees vary from course to course and from institution to institution. The tuition fees usually vary from US$ 5,000 to US$ 20,000 (Rupees 2.4 Lakh to Rupees 10 Lakh) per annum. The estimated living expenses per annum are around US$ 5,000 to US$ 10,000 (Rupees 2.5 to 5 Lakh approximately) depending on the lifestyle of the student, which include accommodation, food, travel expenses, clothing and communication etc.

Part Time Work

The students are not permitted to take up any off-the-campus part time work during the course of their studies. However, some institutions permit up-to 20 hours per week of on-the-campus jobs to subsidize their living expenses.
