Undergraduate
Degrees: The normal undergraduate degree
is, generally four years. A combined degree will involve different
subjects, which will not necessarily have equal weighting. A joint
Honours degree will have two subject areas with equal weighting.
Some universities offer courses with Internship, which are made
up of a combination of three years of study and one year spent in
industry. In most of the cases students are being paid for their
work during this year.
Entry Requirements: Year 12 or equivalent from a recognised
board with atleast 70% marks. An alternative entry path is to successfully
complete a Foundation Studies program or enter via a Higher National
Diploma (HND) course offered by the recognised Canadian institution.
It is mandatory for students to appear for any English Language
Test like IELTS with a minimum of band 6.0 (no individual band less
than 5.5), or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550+/213+.
Postgraduate
Degrees: The Masters degree is usually 2
years in duration. Taught masters' courses allow graduates to specialize
in their subject - by way of lectures, seminars and tutorials- followed
by a period of research. Doctoral Degrees take 4 to 7 years and
students are expected to carry out original research and produce
a thesis.
Entry Requirements: An undergraduate degree from a recognised
university in the relevant subject with 1st division. Students are
normally expected to have a postgraduate degree for research program.
Students are required to take standardized tests such as the Graduate
Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test
(GMAT) for the courses in Business, Engineering & Computer Science.
It is mandatory for students to appear for any English Language
Test like IELTS with a minimum of band 6.0 (no individual band less
than 5.5), or TOEFL with a minimum score of 550+/213+. Some courses
require 2-3 years of work experience.

Part Time Work
An international student is not permitted to work in Canada except
on a cooperative education placement. When planning the finances
for education, one should not depend on income earned while in Canada.

The session starts mainly in September and January but some institutions

What is a foundation course?
A foundation course is designed to offer students who do not meet
the direct entry requirements into a chosen level of study, to gain
an alternative pathway to university. The duration of these courses
varies from 3 months to 12 months. There are various advantages
of going through the foundation course; the student gets individual
attention of the teachers as the classroom sizes are very small.
The courses combine English with academic programs. Moreover, the
student usually gets to study at a university campus and gets advanced
standing with the universities.
Is IELTS/TOEFL exam compulsory?
As English is the language of instruction at all Canadian Institutions
of higher education, students must demonstrate a proficiency in
English to be accepted for a third level programme. Generally, the
required minimum score in TOEFL is 550+/213+ or IELTS band 6.0 to
6.5.
Am I supposed to take GRE/GMAT for courses in Business or Computer
Science or Management?
Students may be required to take standardized tests such as the
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Graduate Management Admissions
Test (GMAT) for the courses in Business, Engineering & Computer
Science. The required score in GMAT ranges from 500-600 and that
in GRE ranges from 1100-1300.
Is it difficult to get Education Loan from Bank?
No! The nationalized banks are promoting to disburse the education
loan and we assist you to complete the formalities.
Can I pay the fee in installments?
Yes! Most of the institutions accept tuition fee semester-wise.
Can I take up a part time job whilst studying in Canada? What is
the amount I am likely to earn and can I sustain myself on it?
International students are permitted to work up to 10-20 hours a
week during term time and full time during vacations only on the
campus but not off-campus. Students do not require a work permit
for this.
The amount earned varies from C$ 8 to C$ 25 per hour. While this
is generally not sufficient to sustain students, it does come in
handy as additional pocket money. However, when applying for a visa,
students must show evidence of full financial support from other
sources to cover their tuition and living costs.
I have got admission into a Canadian university. Can my spouse accompany
me? Can he/she work in Canada?
Yes, spouses can accompany full time students on a Dependent visa,
provided you can show that adequate funds are available for their
support. Spouses can also work full time if his/her stay is for
a year or more.
Can my overseas relatives sponsor my studies in Canada?
Yes! You should get a sponsorship letter from them indicating the
relationship and the extent to which they are prepared to fund your
studies. You need to provide an affidavit stating the same. Besides
this, they would also be required to show evidence of financial
support (e.g. bank statements, salary certificate, a statement from
the Chartered Accountant, their source of income etc.). The relatives
mean parents, brother, sister, step-parent, step-brother/sister,
grandparent, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, step-grandparent, step-aunt/uncle,
step niece/nephew.
Can I stay with my relatives while studying in Canada?
Yes, you can. You could also of course, live on campus. This would
enable you to use the library, IT and extracurricular facilities
to a greater extent. You would also get to know other international
students better. Most institutions would be happy to arrange on-campus
accommodation for international students during their first year.
Can I take up a job after completing my course in Canada?
If you are offered a job, your employer has to apply to the Home
office for your work permit. This can take a couple of months or
more. During the interim period, you might be required to come back
to India, but it is not mandatory.
What do I do to procure a student visa to study in Canada?
To begin with, you will need the following to procure a student
visa for studying in Canada:
- Completed visa application form
- An unconditional offer of acceptance on a full time course
- All education certificates & transcripts
- Evidence of funding for the entire duration of the course
(to cover both tuition and living costs)
- A valid passport
- 8 passport size photographs
- A letter from the institution showing that the fees are paid
- Proof of proficiency in English language
- Visa application fee*
*Standard non-refundable Visa Application Processing Fees are charged
at Rs. 3,750 payable through a demand draft and Rs. 3,825 if paying
in cash.
The visa application form has to be filled and submitted to the
Visa Section at the Canadian High Commission.
Will I need to attend an interview?
After reviewing your application, a visa officer will decide if
an interview is necessary. If so, the officer will contact you directly
to set up a time and place for an appointment.
May I leave Canada and return?
Yes. However, should your student authorization expire while you
are out of Canada, you may not be allowed to return to study.
What can I do if I become ill in Canada while a student?
The major universities and institutes of technology have medical
centres on campus, or arrangements with General Practitioners based
nearby.
What about health insurance for students in Canada?
All international students in Canada must have health insurance.
Medical coverage available to international students varies from
province to province. In provinces where international students
are not covered under provincial health care plans, students must
arrange for private health insurance coverage. The approximate cost
involved is C$ 530 for a year.
I am currently studying for an undergraduate course in Canada and
have got admission into a Masters course. Do I have to return to
India to extend my student visa?
Yes, in most of the cases. However, you can apply for an extension
of student authorization while in Canada well before your current
student authorization expires. If you are not granted an extension
while in Canada, you will be required to come back to India and
apply afresh for another visa.
