About the College
The Institute of Technology, Sligo is a modern and vibrant institute
located in Ireland's one of the most beautiful cities, Sligo. IT
Sligo's record in providing courses, which meet the needs of the
communities it serves, is well established. The institute takes
pride in the range and nature of courses it has initiated and is
continuing to develop. In choosing to come to this college the student
will also open up the possibility of studying abroad or of gaining
valuable work experience through a structured work placement or
of pursuing studies to postgraduate level, depending on the course
taken.
The Institute has a wide range of modern, well equipped laboratories,
studios and workshops where students gain first-hand experience
of, and training on, sophisticated scientific, engineering and business
equipment. The Institute has many studios, laboratories and workshops
where the students gain practical knowledge of their course of study.
The Institute provides excellent accommodation facilities for the
students. The Institute's Yeats Village Accommodation is
located at a wonderful place adjacent to the Institute of Technology,
Sligo. Besides this, the Institute offers many other world-class
off-campus accommodation facilities also.
Examining & Awarding Bodies
The postgraduate and undergraduate degree programmes offered by
the Institute of Technology, Sligo are validated by the Higher Education
and Training Awards Council (HETAC), Dublin City University.
In association with the University of Manchester, the Institute
is a recognised centre for the Masters in Science Education (M.Ed.).
The Institute is a Member of Professional Associations. Graduation
from many of the Institute's courses gives exemption from the examinations
of relevant professional associations. The Institute has formal
articulation agreements with a large number of colleges both nationally
and internationally, facilitating movement of students between partner
colleges. There is a strong cosmopolitan, multicultural feel to
the Institute. Students from every county in the Republic of Ireland
rub shoulders with other students from Northern Ireland, France,
Germany, Spain, U.K., Belgium, Netherlands, Greece, Sweden, Finland,
Japan, Austria, USA, Colombia, Somalia, South Africa and Iran. The
Institute also offers Accelerated technician courses, which
arise from an Industry/Institute of Technology partnership to address
key technician skill needs of the Irish economy, attract new categories
of students and to provide opportunities to them to acquire relevant
qualifications and industrial experience. They also offer upskilling
of existing employees. The 18-month courses combine two six-month
periods in the Institute, which span a six-month period of placement
and lead to a National Certificate qualification.
The City- Sligo
Sligo is the capital of the North West region and one of Ireland's
largest towns. It accounts for one third of the population of Sligo
County with some 20,000 residents. Sligo town is situated on the
Garavogue River and is a thriving tourist, commercial and administrative
regional centre. It is an important location for Industry and many
leading multi-nationals are based here. The ready availability of
a skilled workforce, excellent third level education and training
institutions together with easy access via airport, road and rail
make Sligo an attractive location for incoming industry.
Sligo is a beautiful county with a long Atlantic coastline, unspoilt
countryside, mountains, lakes and countless other natural attributes.
Sligo offers an excellent quality of life, with a wide range of
sporting and recreational facilities available. Sligo boasts a very
vibrant nightlife, with a selection of nightclubs, live entertainment,
theatres and other cultural attractions.
Faculties
of Study
There are three faculties of study at the Institute of Technology,
Sligo. These are as follows:
- School
of Business & Humanities: The School of Business
and Humanities has a long and successful tradition of high quality
education and is dedicated to the provision of full-time and part-time
courses of academic excellence and vocational relevance. It offers
courses at degree, diploma and certificate level to over 2,000
full-time students. The School's strong portfolio of courses which
has a high national and international profile covers areas such
as Business Studies, Accountancy, Management, Computing, e-Business,
Office Information Systems, Recreation and Leisure, Tourism, Marketing
and Languages, European Business, Art and Design, Applied Social
Studies and Performing Arts.
A significant feature of the School of Business and Humanities
is its strong commitment to the importance of developing links
with other institutions of learning in Europe and in the United
States of America. The School has links with partner Colleges
in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Spain, Portugal,
Norway, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United
Kingdom, Denmark and Austria.
- School of Engineering: The
mission of the school is to ensure that each student obtains the
highest standard and quality of engineering education commensurate
with the qualification they seek.
The School of Engineering at the Institute of Technology, Sligo
is well recognized throughout the industry for the high caliber
of its engineering graduates and for working in close partnership
with industry. Many of the existing courses have been developed
specifically at the request of industry or at the behest of state
bodies that have identified specialist skill needs.
Compared with other third level engineering schools, Sligo stands
out as having industrial placement as part of many of its courses.
The extent of the school's cooperation with industry is evident
in that in excess of 75 companies take its engineering students
on placement, annually. A pool of 200 companies has taken engineering
placements student in the past 5 years. The significant contribution
of the School, at a national level, bears out in that 90% of those
with engineering qualifications, who go to industry, find employment
in Ireland and 60% of those is located in the BMW region.
Areas of study include: Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering,
Civil Engineering, Construction Studies and Interior Architecture.
The School of Engineering provides a number of courses at Apprentice,
Certificate, Diploma, Degree and postgraduate level. The Department
of Mechanical and Electronic Engineering is a multi-disciplinary
department embracing such areas as Mechanical and Electronic Engineering,
Tool Design, Industrial Automation, Quality Management, Product
Design and Development and Research at Post-Graduate level. The
Department of Civil Engineering and Construction is equally diverse,
with courses in Civil Engineering, Construction Studies, Water
Engineering, and Construction Economics, and postgraduate studies.
The Department of Engineering Trades trains apprentices in Carpentry
and Joinery and Tool making.
- School of Science: The School
of Science is one of the biggest Schools of Science among the
Institutes of Technology, with an enviable reputation for developing
and delivering novel courses.
The School of Science has invested heavily in recent years and
has constructed new, state of the art laboratories, including
facilities to aid in the teaching of Environmental Science, Occupational
Health and Safety, Pharmaceutical Science, Health Science and
Biomedical Science. The School of Science recently opened a new
Pharmaceutical Science Centre; the first of it's kind in the country.
Graduates of the Science courses on offer in the Institute of
Technology Sligo gain well-paid and challenging positions within
industry such as the Pharmaceutical, Medical Device and Chemical
industries, and the public sector including Government Departments
such as the EPA, Marine and Agriculture, Food and Forestry, Health
Boards etc.
The Institute of Technology Sligo has been to the fore in identifying
growth areas within the economy and was the first third level
college in Ireland to provide a Degree course in Environmental
Science, and a Degree course in Pharmaceutical Science.
Graduates readily find employments in many diverse areas including:
Quality Assurance, Validation, Drug formulation, Environmental
Management, Health and Safety Management, Research and Development,
Process Development, Quality Control, Health management.
